Two players roll dice and collect cards. Six cards are laid open that show pirates in various colours, depending on their value.
x
In a turn, a player throws 2 dice of which he uses one to place it with one of the cards. The first die placed determines the rank of the cards, from one to six. A player may pass or continue. If he continues, he again throws two dice, and uses one to place it with a pirates card.
x
If he passes and calls out a 'Shanghaien', first all cards that have no dice next to them are removed from play. Next for each of the six cards is checked how many dice there are next to this card; it goes to the player who has the most dice next to it. Six new cards are laid out and a new round begins. This way players collect cards.
At game end the pirates of both players are compared and their value totalled; the player with the highest total for a pirate gets all the opposing cards of this pirate - so the winner gets the lesser scored cards!
There are eight bonus cards that give a reroll on the dice, or a +1 on a die.

Zooloretto goes Flipper!
Aquaretto, not an expansion but a stand alone game with the same mechanics as Zooloretto brings us some new features such as trainers, cashiers, or attendants.
The cashier gives a player an extra point for each coin he possesses at game end; two of them even two points per coin. The attendants give additional points for animal tiles with a fish symbol, and the trainer gives extra points for each animal tile he is adjacent to.
Finally there is the manager, who halves the minus points for animals that could not be placed correctly.
x
Aquaretto also can be played jointly with Zooloretto; money earned at one place can be used elsewhere.
