Rumour has it that the expansions for Dominion are only produced so that Michael Menzel can draw his magnificent artwork again…

Who we are and what we do does not matter; as long as we collect points and do this efficiently, we can be sure to win this game with a vague theme and an uninspiring subtitle: ‘Discover the islands’. Well now, such a novel activity makes the difference for a seasoned gamer and potential buyer!

At start, the blue coast tiles are laid out face up, the other tiles face down. These coast tiles show lighthouses, huts or churches. Not quite coincidentally, these coincides with a players supply: he has several huts, two lighthouses and three churches - and a hand of cards. At the start all players may place one of their pieces on one of the blue tiles without playing a card; adjacent tiles are turned face up so players now see how valuable they are when occupied.

In a turn a player has to play one of his cards to occupy one of the adjacent spaces of his starting location, immediately scoring the points for it. Locations can be reached by road or river, or by playing a water card for other locations at the coast. All players have a slightly different hand of travel cards, e.g. one player has one more land card, and another one more water card.

At the start of the game each player also got two scoring cards. At any given time in the round he will have to play these cards, even if he does not benefit from it, as all players score when such a card is played: for sheep, for sheep and fish, for gold, for churches, for occupied volcano sites, etc.

Ehrm, did I say volcano? Maybe it erupts by an action card being played, but this is not certain as not all action cards are in the game. When it does, all occupied volcano spaces are emptied and players in question get a -2 penalty. When all cards have been played, the first round ends. All pieces are removed from the board but face up tiles stay, giving players better insight for the second round.

The last player in position now chooses one hand of cards from any other player, including the two scoring cards, etc. until all have a new hand. Each player draws a third scoring card but has to discard one, so no player can be sure if the same scoring cards will be played in the second round.

Thank you Santa, for the new designed playing pieces. We didn' t have those shapes yet in our collection!
